“What you do, and how you work with brands?”

If you've been wondering about the question above, this blog post is for you.

This is what a typical Wednesday looks like for me, when I sit down to work (after having my first coffee, solving all the NYT minis and LinkedIn daily games, and getting dressed):

09:00 - 09:15 - Checking in with my Australian clients - replying to any Slack messages or emails, and sharing important updates, just before they log off for the day.

09:15 - 09:30 - Checking in with my European clients, who started their day an hour or two ago, depending on their (and my) timezone.

09:30 - 09:35 - Making a second coffee. Very important for the rest of the day.

09:35 - 11:00 - That’s when I open the dashboards of all my clients’ Email Service Providers (we’re currently looking at 4 different ones) and check some performance stats.

If I see any fun wins that I can share with them, or notice any issues we need to tend to, I send my clients and their team a quick message (many times, I just go in and fix it myself, but letting them know what’s going on regularly is super important. I know how much it means to them to get these updates!).

After that, I usually review email copy that my clients’ writers have submitted for feedback, and leave clarification questions or helpful comments on the Google Doc they shared with me.

In case the emails I read have already gone through a revision, they are usually ready for implementation. I feel very lucky to be working with several client teams who have such great writers.

When the email copy is ready, I get in touch with the person who takes care of the website/other fun tech stuff, to make sure that the links we’re including in the emails are going to work. It’s heartbreaking to have a beautifully crafted email that sends folks to a 404 page!

I also make sure that, if applicable, the actions our subscribers will take on the page will be “fed” back into our Email Service Provider. For example, if we’re sending out a promotion and our subscribers buy/schedule a sales call, I want them to be tagged and segmented in the ESP automatically, so that we’ll stop sending them the promotional emails. Instead, they will start getting post-purchase or “what to expect from/prepare for our call” emails.

Once the tech is sorted, the copy is done, and the graphics are ready, it’s time to implement the emails in the ESP. If my clients have someone who’s in charge of that, I forward them the different elements of the email, along with implementation instructions. I do have some clients where I do that part myself as well.

When the emails are all set up, I test them, fix anything that needs fixing (if any), and schedule them for sending.

11:00 - 11:45 - Weekly team meeting with one of my European-based clients.

11:45 - 12:00 - Sending any time-sensitive emails or tying up any loose ends for things that need to be taken care of, before taking a break.

12:00 - 12:30 - Lunchtime! Contrary to popular belief, I don’t eat pasta 24/7.

My go-to lunch dishes include eggs, vegetables, and cheese - it can be a simple salad with an omelet, or my latest crush - savory spinach & yogurt pancakes with jammy eggs and chilli crisp:

12:30 - 14:00 - That’s when I take a break, because in the afternoon, I’ll be checking in and working with my U.S.-based clients. I use this chunk to either run errands, take a power nap, read my book, or go climb a nearby hill (a hill a day keeps the saggy butt away!).

I learned that splitting my day like that helps me be shraper, more present, and more creative in the afternoon. Better for me, better for my clients, and better for their clients/customers!

14:00 - 17:30ish - Usually includes a more relaxed mix of client meetings and continuing (or repeating) the same email chiefing tasks I did between 10 and 11 am.

Late afternoon/early evening - I usually have a monthly networking session with one of the communities I’m a part of. But if I don’t -

Closing time - (If you read this and thought of the song/Scrubs, we’re the same kind of weird!) I write my to-do list and prioritize the different tasks, so that I know exactly what I’ll be doing tomorrow. For someone who’s not a morning person, this approach has been really helpful.

If I have a consultation call or a VIP strategy day with a client the next day, I use this bit to prepare for it - reviewing the documents they sent my way and gently poking around their Email Service Provider. I write down the important notes that we’ll go over together and what I’ll advise them to do instead.

In the evenings, I’m either going for a walk, meeting a friend, attending a social gathering, or just cooking something healthy and delicious and chilling in front of a TV show. I’m currently watching Foundation, but I'm always looking for new recommendations.

And that’s all, folks!

Now that you know what I do and how I work with my clients - If you know that your email list has a hidden 6-figure potential, I'd love to help you discover it. Schedule a no-obligation call with me here.
